This clever statue, made by a local artist, was exhibited some while ago. I was fascinated by his use of unwanted pieces of technology from computer mice (or should that be mouses), keyboards, kettles, and TV remotes amongst other bits and pieces of discarded equipment that could well have finished up in landfill.

The technology that constantly changes is the storage of music. Having to get our favourite albums in the new tech has been a lifelong task.

This photo what taken on a visit to the British Museum, London. I love watches and clocks and there was so many to look at. This one stood out as you can see the mechanism and the graft of the watchmaker that went into producing this beautiful pocket watch.

Using modern technology architects were able to preserve the shape of the Cutty Sark’s hull and relieve pressure on the keel. This feat of engineering has restored the ship to its former glory and has enabled visitors to enjoy it for many years to come.

This is an equatorial sundial which I noticed on a visit to the American Museum at Claverton Down on the outskirts of Bath. This qualifies as Ancient Technology. The sundial is designed to be aligned parallel to the Earth’s equator, it has a spherical shape and is equipped with a gnomon that casts a shadow on the dial’s equatorial plane. The hour lines on the dial are equally spaced, making it an equiangular sundial. Apart from the technical details, I particularly like the contrast between the golden colour of the sphere against the almost perfect blue of the sky.

Multicoloured coiled ethernet cables

A beacon shining in the forest at night. Simple but effective use of technology taken at The Enchanted Forest just outside Pitlochry. Solas is the Gaelic for light.

Cotton was first spun by machinery in England around the 1730's, since then the technology has improved quite considerably.

Just a bit of fun with some miniature figures and an old circuit board.

Taken at the Cambridge Computer History Museum this shows some detail of a 300 mm silicon wafer. Back in 1980 these were 150 mm in diameter, rising to 200 mm by 1991, and 300 mm by 2001. I love the way that the museum lights have created this attractive photograph of something we rarely see but dominates our current lives.

This image was captured during an organised visit to the Power Station. It shows one of the main turbine generators in the turbine Hall. Drax now burns sustainable wood chips to generate electricity.

This old lightbulb was available as part of a still life photoshoot exercise. It appealed to me as it appeared to be handcrafted, more decorative than functional and far more durable than the lightbulbs made today. The patterns in the filament are quite complex.

My entry for the 'Technology' theme includes these two examples; the old windmill at Thaxted contrasting with the modern jet plane making its way to Stansted airport. In a strange way, the sails of the windmill seem almost to be welcoming the new technology with 'open arms'.
